Alcoholism – Why is it an issue?

When people are reported to be suffering from alcoholism, they are usually found to possess an far from normal urge for alcohol. Such individuals are also commonly known as alcoholics. In many places, alcoholism is a condition that is taken seriously. Because of their inability to control their drinking obsessions, the lives of alcoholics are negative affected. Alcoholics suffer job losses, problems in their relationships and the social stigma associated with such states. Many people have put forward suggestions on what might be the cause of alcoholism. A study of the psychological ,genetic and social factors is considered by many to hold the key and answer to alcoholism. Rehabilitation is currently the most common method of curing alcoholism.

Alcoholism is not a word that is generally used in medical circles. Instead simpler and shorter terms are used in defining the level of alcohol.Light drinking disorders are referred to as problem drinking or alcohol abuse whilst more severe cases are classified as Alcohol depenedence.

People that suffer from Alcohol dependence are unable to stop drinking even after they realize that its effect is slowly destroying their lives. Such is the nature of their dependence that they are literally unable to stop. The periods where they are found to be sober are characterized by withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating and anxiety. They are also found to develop high alcohol tolernance .

Statistics put the number of people suffering from alcohol at well over 76 million.

Results of genetic studies has lent strength to the claim that the genes of an individual affect the chances of him/her becoming an alcoholic. In the cases of identical twins for example, the chances of the second party developing into an alcoholic when the first is shown to be one is found to be high. These findings have led to the growing call to treat and view the issue of alcoholism as a disease.

Alcohol dependence is also found to cause severe side effects. For example, regular use of alcohol has been shown to cause damage to the heart muscle. Alcohol abuse is also one of the major causes of liver damage. When alcohol is drank by a pregnant woman, she exposes her child to the possibility of being born with fetal alcohol syndrome. In large enough quantities, drinking alcohol will result in death.
