An Increasing Number Of Parents Are Choosing A Non-Religious Alternative To A Christening Or Baptism

All over the world there are traditions of ceremonies that acknowledge the arrival of a new baby. At the ceremonies the child is welcomed into the community and chosen adults make promises about the raising of the child.

Most people think of Christenings, or Baptisms, as being the church services offered by the Church of England or the Catholic Church. However, as well as the traditional church ceremonies there are a number of non-religious alternatives available, as well as less formal options, such as a family naming-day held at home.

In the UK, those wanting a formal service in a church but without the need to commit the baby to becoming a member of that particular church in later life, the Church of England introduced in 1999 a Thanksgiving and a Blessing service. Futhermore, with an increasing number of parents wanting a non-religious service, local authorities have also started to offer Civil Naming ceremonies: formal services along the lines of civil wedding ceremonies and held in the local town hall or some such function room.

A further option is provided by the British Humanist Association. Humanists believe that man has advanced without any divine help, and it follows that their services are non-religious. A celebrant from the association is available if required. Commercial businesses have also spotted an opportunity and scripts for services in your own home are freely available. Of course just because you are not holding a religious service it does not follow that you cannot still have ‘godparents’ for the child, you can still have adults who agree to step in and look after the child if something untoward happens to the parents.
