One of the major dental problems that most kids experience is tooth decay, probably because they are the ones who love sweets the most. But adults are also not very far behind. If you would go to a dentist and ask him which of the common dental problems are often presented to him, he would likely say that tooth decay is one of them. We all have gone through the painful experience of having tooth decay and we certainly do not want that to ever happen again. So the question is, how can we prevent tooth decay? The answer is really very easy.
For as long as we can remember, dentists like Dr. Jonathan Hartley, they have been recommending that we should brush our teeth regularly. This usually means at least two times in a day. However, they say that the more sensible thing to do is to brush our teeth after every meal. So if you eat three regular meals within 24 hours, then it means you should be brushing your teeth at least three times a day. Brushing is an essential step in proper dental care because it removes the scraps of food from our teeth and also kills the bacteria that might cause, not only tooth decay, but also other dental problems.
That is if it is only tooth decay that you will be getting for not regularly brushing your pearly whites. You can also suffer from gingivitis, from some forms of throat infection, and probably one of the worst things of all, halitosis. In case you are not familiar what halitosis is, it simply means bad breath. Now, you do not certainly want to have bad breath, do you?
Here some of the ways that Dr. Jonathan Hartley recommends that you do to help prevent tooth decay, gum infection and other common dental problems.
Just to reiterate the importance of it, brushing our teeth is at the forefront of our battle against tooth decay and cavities. But it is not enough. We should also be flossing our teeth as this is more effective in removing the small bits and pieces of food that usually get stuck in between our teeth. Because if we just leave them where they are, they will eventually cause bacteria to build up faster and for our teeth to deteriorate.
When choosing your toothpaste, pick one that has fluoride as its main ingredient. Fluoride helps to strengthen the teeth, making it more resistant against bacteria and cavities. The problem with most people is that they often select their toothpaste whether it tastes better, makes their breath fresher or teeth whiter and not because it makes their teeth stronger, which is the most important of all.
Also, to help your teeth become stronger, you must eat foods rich in calcium. Dairy products quickly comes to mind but also some types of fish, broccoli, and orange juice are good sources of calcium.
However if there is something that we should avoid eating too much of it is carbohydrates and sugar. These usually stick onto the tooth enamel, in turn causing it to weaken and become more prone to cavities. That is why we should stay away from eating too much candies and chips.
Lastly, Dr. Jonathan Hartley recommends that we should still visit our dentist regularly. Because this is the best maintenance that we can give to our teeth as our dentist can properly guide us on how to maintain our teeth and mouth in the best healthy condition.
