Lingering Effects of Alcoholism

Like any other disease, alcoholism has its own long-term effects. One of the most noted long-term effect of alcoholism is in the heart. It has been proven that continuous binge drinking can cause weakening of the muscles of the heart, heart enlargement to abnormal beating of the heart and it can also increase the danger of blood clots in various parts of the body, most especially to the blood vessels of the brain.

Another most likely condition that an alcoholic can develop is stroke. If not caught early and if not treated properly, early death can result out of this disease. Even after the pertinent treatment had been introduced, the danger of these long-term alcoholism effects may still set-in if the treatment was done a little too late. 

Aside from its harsh effects on the heart, severe alcohol dependence may also take its toll on the stomach or intestines of the drinkeras well as inflammation of the pancreas.

Additionally, there is also the danger of internal intestinal bleeding that manifests itself as severe stomach pain and increases the possibility of a liver malfunction.  The primary function of the liver is the breaking down of ethanol (an alcohol) but it cannot do so if it is severaly damaged.

The least talked about possible effect of alcoholism is sterility, especially among men since they are the ones that are seen to generally over indulge in  alcohol.
