STEPS TO REDUCE BINGE DRINKING AMONGST TEENS
Underage drinking has long been a source of aggravation by adolescents since the turn of the century. Unfortunately, it is not only habitual drinking that is an issue, but the way they’re going about it which includes – binge drinking. It has become a high health risk to teens and ultimately a big factor in deaths in teens .
Laws are being passed allowing the authorities to be able to break up parties and then check for officers of the law who are incognito when it is a known factor that certain homes are providing alcohol to underage adolescents . Once found out , the teens are being given a breathalyzer, and the person providing the alcohol, if an adult, is also charged. This is a distinct change in trying to prevent teenage drinking – hitting the adults whether it be the home where the party is held or the younger adults who purchase alcohol for these teens . Even if the adults have no knowledge that there is a party going on in their home, they are suffering the consequences legally.
These fines can range past $2,500 or more. Every state has a legal drinking age, usually 21 and under and it is against the law . Of course, whether these laws are enforced or not is another thing . With laws indicating that they can fine anyone over 21 who is at the get-together and acknowledges underage drinking to go on, parents included, the law enforcement will be able to handle the offense right at the scene, just like a traffic ticket.
It is time that parents and adults get on the ball as they too have to abide by the law . breathalyzerss have been coming to light on the home front so that parents can determine if their teens are out drinking or drinking in the home. It may sound like Gestapo tactics , but the issue has to be addressed to keep our youth from harm’s way. Due to their experimentation with drugs and alcohol, their knowledge and expertise is extremely limited and unfortunately, some are become a statistic . The National Research Council Institute of Medicine found that billions of dollars are costing the nation due to car crashes at an elevated rate.
We have to raise awareness of the situation and the repercussions this is having on our teens. Parents have to be made aware of the role they play and how they need to prevail and influence their children. There are many places who are developing a program of social awareness in this vent.
