Stressfree Divorces
When two people choose to divorce there will naturally be major changes in their lives and if the couple have kids, it will unquestionably be the kids that suffer the most.
For children, divorce can be extremely confusing and in some cases can have long-term effects especially on their future family relationships and lives. Many children will probably need counselling for a few months, even years after the divorce as well.
Kids of pre-school age can find it even more distressing as suddenly mummy and daddy are no longer together and perhaps they are pulled between the two and don’t understand why their parents are all of a sudden apart. However with children this young they may well forget the trauma as they get older and handle the split much better than their elder siblings.
Teenagers could very well become angry with one parent or the other and will lay fault on who they think brought on the split, other may become withdrawn and subdued as they cope with their feelings. Kids of this age could very well have problems in the future with their own family relationships and might have early sexual experiences that don’t really mean anything.
If the child is in school, especially secondary school their grades may well suffer. For many years, children can nonetheless be affected from the divorce and if either parent re-marries might have issues accepting their new ‘parent’.
To avoid any unneeded stress on your kids keeping your divorce as friendly as possible is essential. Parent’s differences should be put aside for the childs sake and the divorce proceeding made as easy as possible.
Try to explain to the child exactly what is happening and do your best to avoid arguing with your partner in front of them. Harsh words between angry parents may be overlooked by the parent but can stick in a child’s mind for several years to come.
