Ways The Marine Corps And The Coast Guard Got Started And What They Do Now
Since the terrorist attacks on 9/11 2001 a lot of Americans that were serving in the country’s military soon realized that they would probably be involved in a war. Unfortunately, thousands of our military members have been killed in the war in the Middle East that still continues today. Lives have been lost in all 5 of the different military branches. When they arrive home following a lengthy deployment in the Middle East they are welcomed by loved ones bearing military gifts and carrying banners with the military decals on them thankful that their soldier has made it home safe.
The people that are veterans or active members of these various branches are very proud of the duty they have taken on to protect this nation as they should be. The Armed Forces of the United States of America take their job to protect our nation seriously and we should be so firtunate to have so many men and women volunteer to serve on the armed forces and to risk their lives for their nation. 2 of the branches that will be discussed in this article are the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard.
The Marine Corps are often known as the Infantry of the Navy due to the duties and responsibilities that they take on. Their main specialty is to assault, capture and control those on the coastal land in order to be able to close in on them from all aspects of land, sea and air. They were established on November 10, 1775 as a landing force for the Navy. They were made into a separate group in 1798. In addition to being in charge of amphibious operations, they are also engaged in combat on the ground too. Often, the marines are called on 1st because they are fast to deploy and also have their own power in the form of air power and attack helicopters. The marines do receive help from the Navy for other aspects such as logistics and medical aid for example. There are only 18,000 officers and a little over 150,000 enlisted members of the Marines making them one of the smaller branches.
The Coast Guard was originally formed as the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790 and was later assigned as the Coast Guard in 1915, under the Treasury department. Then in 1967, the Coast Guard was sent to the Department of transportation versus the Department of Defense as all of the other military branches are under. Then in 2002, they were named part of the Department of Homeland Security. In the past the Coast Guard was in charge of boating safety, sea rescue and illegal immigration control but now the Commander in Chief may transfer the Coast Guard to the Navy in times of conflict for needed assistance. It is the smallest military service with only 7,000 members and 29,000 enlisted on active duty.
Both the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard are essential to maintaining our country safe whether it is by land or at sea. Despite their lower enrollments, these two branches are a couple of the important elements in our Armed forces.
